Sailing Club Zvir Hvar

Fešta forske pulene: a gathering of Dalmatia's traditional boats

6 October 2011

1st GATHERING OF TRADITIONAL BOATS OF DALMATIA
FEŠTA FORSKE PULENE
HVAR, 7–9 October 2011

ORGANIZERS:
Town of Hvar
The "Hvar metropola mora" association
Zvir Sailing Club

WHY THIS GATHERING?

When club Zvir was founded, all of its sailing boats were built of wood, just like all the other boats in the town harbour.

Hvar grew large, rich and powerful thanks to its position on the Adriatic, to fishing and to trade. The sardine built almost everything that makes Hvar recognizable and distinctive.

With this gathering we want to pay tribute to our ancestors who, thanks to the wooden boat, their skill and extraordinary effort, achieved what we are proud of today and what makes us who we are. With this gathering we want to enrich Hvar's cultural life, and to preserve and promote our maritime heritage.

Our wish is to launch the building of a replica of the Hvar galley "Sveti Jerolim", which took part in the famous Battle of Lepanto in 1571 and whose prow was adorned by a figurehead, popularly known as ZVIR, now on display in the Hvar Arsenal.

So we invite everyone who owns a kaić, batana, gajeta, loja, pasara, leut, bracera, trabakul, krstaš, any other wooden sailing vessel, trawler or old tourist boat to join us. The only condition is that the boat should look as close to the original as possible, without major later additions
