Sailing Club Zvir Hvar

Getting there and staying — for teams

For coaches and team leaders coming to the New Year's Regatta: how to reach Hvar in December, where to berth, what to pack and where to feed the team. For anything else, the race office: +385 98 980 2181, info@jkzvir.hr.

Getting there

Hvar is an island. The town of Hvar is reached by catamaran from Split (about an hour, foot passengers only — Jadrolinija, Krilo and TP Line) or by car ferry Split – Stari Grad (about two hours, vehicles and trailers — Jadrolinija) and then 20 minutes by road. The winter timetable has fewer sailings than summer: check it before you leave and allow for a jugo or a bura cancelling the catamaran — the Stari Grad ferry runs in rougher weather.

  • Boat trailers go on the Stari Grad ferry. The club helps registered teams with Jadrolinija discounts: see the Travel page.

Berths and boats

ILCA dinghies are hauled out at Križna luka beside the club; coach boats moor in the harbour by arrangement with the race office. Boats arriving by sea berth in Hvar harbour — tell the office the number and length of boats in advance; there is plenty of room in winter.

December in Hvar

Sea temperature around 14 °C, air 8–14 °C; the wind is either bura (northerly, cold and dry) or jugo (southerly, warm and wet). Days are short — daylight from about 7:30 to 16:30 — so racing starts in the morning, usually around 10:00, and finishes by mid-afternoon. Bring full wetsuits or drysuits, spare gloves and hats, warm dry clothes for ashore and a windproof layer for anyone in the coach boat.

Accommodation and food

The club arranges team accommodation at favourable rates — see the Accommodation page. Fewer restaurants open in winter than in summer, but enough for teams: tell the race office how many you are and when, and we will recommend and book a place that can seat a party of ten or so for dinner.

Arrival and registration

  • Registration is at the race office in the clubhouse, Put Križa 2, on the day before the regatta (afternoon) and on the morning of the first day before the first start — bring the team list, insurance and class fees.
  • The notice board is online, on the regatta page; a printed schedule is handed out at registration.
  • Parking for trailers and vehicles: as directed by the club on arrival.
